A good HRBP job description tells candidates which business they will partner, who they will report to, what they will be measured on and what level of judgement the role needs. Most HRBP job descriptions in India do none of that. They list "strategic partner", "drive people agenda" and "stakeholder management", and then wonder why the shortlist is full of recruiters and payroll executives.
Below are three ready-to-use HRBP job descriptions — Associate HRBP, HRBP, and Senior HRBP or HRBP Manager — each with a role summary, responsibilities, KRAs, qualifications and an indicative pay reference. Copy the one that fits, then adjust it with the industry add-ons and the checklist that follow.
What a Good HRBP Job Description Must Include
| Section | What to write | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Business unit and size | Which function or business the HRBP will support, and roughly how many employees | Tells candidates the scope; an HRBP for 80 people and one for 1,500 are different jobs |
| Reporting line | Solid line (usually HR head) and dotted line (usually the business head) | Shows how much business access the role really has |
| Role summary | Three or four sentences on the problem this HRBP is hired to solve | Attracts candidates who have solved that problem before |
| Responsibilities | Six to nine specific duties, not a list of every HR activity | Long generic lists attract generalists |
| KRAs | Four or five outcomes the role will be measured on | The best candidates look for this first |
| Qualifications and experience | Minimum years, required exposure and preferred background | Filters the shortlist honestly |
| Pay band or reference | A range, or at least the grade | Saves both sides from late-stage surprises |

Industry Add-Ons
Add two or three lines from the relevant industry to whichever template you use.
| Industry | Responsibilities to add | Experience to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| IT and IT services | Track bench and utilisation with delivery heads; manage attrition in high-demand skills; support project ramp-ups and ramp-downs | Experience supporting delivery or engineering teams; comfort with large calibration cycles |
| Manufacturing | Manage industrial relations and union engagement; support wage settlements; oversee contract labour compliance and shop-floor discipline | Plant HR or IR experience; working knowledge of the four Labour Codes in force from 21 November 2025 (PIB) |
| Startups | Build basic HR policies and processes; support hiring directly; advise founders on structure and culture | Generalist breadth; comfort with ambiguity and building from scratch |
| BPO and BFSI | Manage early-tenure attrition; support large distributed teams and supervisors; handle shift and productivity issues | High-volume HR experience; supervisor-coaching experience |

JD Mistakes That Attract the Wrong Candidates
- Copying a generalist JD and adding "strategic". If the duties are payroll, onboarding and leave, the role is a generalist role whatever the title says.
- Hiding the business. "Support business stakeholders" says nothing. Name the function and its size.
- Listing twenty responsibilities. Long lists read as "you will do everything" and put off experienced HRBPs.
- No KRAs. Senior candidates want to know how they will be judged before they apply.
- No dotted line to the business. An HRBP with no access to the business head cannot partner with them; say clearly who they will work with.
- Experience that does not match the title. Asking for 12 years for an "Associate HRBP" or 3 years for a "Senior HRBP" confuses both candidates and recruiters.
Using the JD to Tailor Your Resume
If you are applying rather than hiring, read the KRAs section first. Each KRA tells you what evidence the hiring manager wants to see. Rewrite your resume bullets so that at least three of them match the KRAs with a number: attrition reduced from X% to Y%, a headcount plan delivered for a unit of Z people, a calibration cycle run for N employees. Then check the experience line. If the JD asks for business-facing experience, lead with the business you supported, not the HR processes you ran.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should an HRBP job description include?
An HRBP job description should name the business unit and its size, the solid and dotted reporting lines, a short role summary, six to nine specific responsibilities, four or five KRAs the role will be measured on, the required experience and qualifications, and a pay band or grade.
What qualifications are required for an HRBP?
There is no mandatory qualification. Many Indian employers prefer an MBA or PGDM in HR, with 5 to 9 years of HR experience for an HRBP role, including some time supporting a business unit. Business understanding and employment law knowledge often matter more than the degree.
How many years of experience does a senior HRBP need?
Senior HRBP and HRBP manager roles in India usually ask for 10 or more years of HR experience, including at least four years as an HRBP and some experience leading other HR professionals. Payscale's 2026 data shows HRBPs with 10 to 19 years of experience averaging about ₹16.2 lakh in base pay.
Who does an HRBP report to?
In most companies an HRBP reports to the HR head or CHRO and has a dotted-line relationship with the business head they support. Some companies reverse this. A good job description states both lines clearly.
