How Half Pay Leave Salary Is Calculated
There are two methods, and which one applies depends on your category and pay:
At the current 37% DA, the 65% figure is always the higher one for protected staff, so they receive 65% of their duty pay plus DA. Everyone else receives half of pay plus DA. HRA and other compensatory allowances such as city compensatory allowance or hill tract allowance are paid in full for the first 180 days of a spell of leave.
Kerala Half Pay Leave Salary Examples at 37% DA
| Item (full month, HRA class B) | Non-gazetted, ₹40,000 basic | ₹60,000 basic |
|---|---|---|
| Half pay | ₹20,000 | ₹30,000 |
| DA | ₹14,800 (on full pay) | ₹11,100 (on half pay) |
| Special leave allowance | ₹820 | Not applicable |
| HRA (8%) | ₹3,200 | ₹4,800 |
| Half pay leave salary | ₹38,820 | ₹45,900 |
| Salary on duty | ₹58,000 | ₹87,000 |
| Leave salary as % of duty salary | 66.9% | 52.8% |
In the first column, 65% of pay plus DA (₹54,800) is ₹35,620, which is ₹820 more than half pay plus full DA (₹34,800), so ₹820 is paid as special leave allowance. Deductions such as GPF or NPS, SLI and GIS then come off this amount; enter them in the calculator to see your in-hand pay.

Half Pay Leave or Commuted Leave?
Commuted leave converts half pay leave into leave on full pay: you get full pay, DA and allowances, but each day of commuted leave uses two days of your half pay leave account. It can be granted up to half the half pay leave due, and earned leave and commuted leave together cannot exceed 240 days at a time. Half pay leave keeps more days in your account but pays less; the calculator shows both figures for the same days so you can compare. For leave you will encash at retirement, use the leave encashment calculator.
Kerala Pay Revision and This Calculator
Pay is on the 2019 pay revision scales (₹23,000 to ₹1,66,800, effective 1 July 2019). The 12th Pay Revision Commission was constituted in February 2026; until a new revision is notified, the ₹50,200 limit and the HRA rates above continue. The calculator uses whatever basic pay and DA you enter, so it stays usable when DA changes.

How the Figures Are Worked Out
Half pay is 50% of basic pay. DA is worked out on half pay, or on full pay for non-gazetted staff with pay up to ₹50,200, who also get a top-up to 65% of pay plus DA. HRA follows the class rate with its minimum and maximum. The monthly amount is divided by the days in the month and multiplied by the leave days. Amounts are rounded to the rupee.

- Your pay slip and your office's leave order decide the actual figures.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is half pay leave salary calculated in Kerala?
Under KSR Rule 93, leave salary is half the pay you would draw on duty plus DA on it. Non-gazetted officers with pay up to ₹50,200 get DA on full pay and at least 65% of pay plus DA. HRA continues for the first 180 days.
Is HRA paid during half pay leave in Kerala?
Yes. HRA and other compensatory allowances continue during leave with allowances: for the whole period if a spell of leave is up to 180 days, and for the first 180 days if it is longer.
What is special leave allowance?
For non-gazetted officers with pay up to ₹50,200, if half pay plus DA is less than 65% of duty pay plus DA, the shortfall is paid as special leave allowance.
How many days of half pay leave are earned in a year?
20 days for each completed year of service, under KSR Rule 83. Half pay leave can be taken on private affairs or on medical certificate.
What is the half pay leave salary on ₹40,000 basic pay?
For a non-gazetted employee at 37% DA in a class B town, about ₹38,820 for a full month: ₹20,000 half pay, ₹14,800 DA, ₹820 special leave allowance and ₹3,200 HRA.
What is the difference between half pay leave and commuted leave?
Half pay leave pays half pay plus DA. Commuted leave pays full salary but uses two days of half pay leave for each day taken, up to half the half pay leave due.
What is the current DA for Kerala government employees?
37% of basic pay, raised from 35% by G.O.(P) No.108/2026/Fin of 17 October 2026 and paid from the October 2026 salary.
Does an increment count during half pay leave?
Yes. Leave salary is based on the pay you would draw on duty, so an increment that falls due during the leave raises the half pay from that date.
